FEW WORDS ABOUT MYSELF
photography • graphic design
My name is John Steelman and I am from League City, TX. I have always loved photography. I started while I was in the Marine Corps stationed at Camp Foster in Okinawa back in 1996. I had always loved the idea of scuba diving and was finally able to get certified through the dive shop on base. A fellow diver in one of the groups I dove with regularly was selling his underwater camera. It was a nice camera at the time. It was a 35mm Sea & Sea camera, a macro lens and a strobe. I went through rolls and rolls of film during my dives. Coming back home from being overseas for 2 years, I found that I wasn’t able to dive as easy and as often I was used to. My service was over, I was home and soon got busy with life -family, school, work and so on. Photography took a distant backseat to everything else going on at the time.
For about 10 years I had worked on the side as a Web and Graphics designer. I purchased a decent camera along the way to help with work -at least that was the excuse I used in order to justify spending the money. I used the camera quite a bit, but mostly for everything other than web and graphics work.
Over the years our boys started playing baseball and we started taking family trips to Jamaica every year. There were so many opportunities to get the camera out and start shooting -so that’s what I did. I invested in better equipment and I made a point to start taking photos, to learn, to practice, and to keep on striving to get better. I look for opportunities to get my camera out -and even more so to edit them and share them. I love not just taking photos, but creating images that depict emotions and feelings and to communicate all of that through a photograph. I hope that everyone can see what I see in my photos.
